Owen’s background

Born in Hong Kong, Owen embarked on his musical journey at the age of 6 when he first started learning the piano and later joining a choir during high school. Since entering university in 2014, he has been teaching music theory and academic music subjects.

Owen pursued his undergraduate music degree at the University of Hong Kong and his master’s in composition at the Royal College of Music. Currently, he is completing the last year of his doctorate in composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Owen is affiliated with the Royal College of Music’s Teaching Service as a music tutor and serves as an official examiner for the Cambridge IGCSE Music Exam.

“Brilliant! Never had a theory lesson before. From my daughter’s first online lesson, she achieved a Distinction in the ABRSM Grade 5 Theory Exam, 6 days later. Time so well spent, we were both shocked how painless it was. Owen would turn around her homework so quickly so she was always able to review, revise and improve.”

About Owen’s online theory teaching

At Music Lessons Anywhere, Owen offers online lessons in ABRSM music theory, academic music (covering GCSE, IGCSE, A-levels, and IB), composition, notation, and essay writing.

He doesn’t see himself as naturally musical, but as someone who has worked hard to reach his current level. This makes him an empathetic teacher, understanding the challenges his students may face and providing tailored support and guidance.

Owen believes that every lesson is an opportunity for students to explore and understand music in their own way.

His teaching approach mirrors his own learning journey, marked by a passion for learning, attention to detail, and an open-minded approach.

He emphasises the importance of allowing students to progress at their own pace, ensuring they fully grasp the concepts taught.

Above all, Owen actively encourages his students to ask questions, no matter how small and fosters a supportive and engaging learning environment.

“Our daughter’s tutor was Owen. We are so grateful as he was unbelievably supportive and patient as a tutor. His skills, help and kindness were absolutely first class. We would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone else needing assistance. Our daughter’s abilities came on in leaps and bounds, and we were blown away at the difference made by Music Lessons Anywhere.”
